# Registration form questions

Collect extra information during registration — t-shirt size, emergency contact, dietary needs, or corporate department.

**Path (challenge):** Challenge → Settings → **Questions**  
**Path (competition):** Competition → Settings → **Questions**

## Question types

| Type | Use for |
|------|---------|
| **Text** | Free-form short answer |
| **Choice** | Dropdown or radio — one option per line in the choices field |
| **Checkbox** | Yes/no consent or opt-in |
| **Number** | Numeric values (bib preference, estimated finish time in minutes, etc.) |

## Question settings

| Field | Meaning |
|-------|-------|
| **Question** | Label shown on the registration form |
| **Order** | Sort order among other questions (lower = higher) |
| **Required** | Participant cannot submit without an answer |
| **Published** | Hidden when unpublished — useful while drafting |
| **Distance** *(competitions only)* | Limit the question to one distance, or leave as **All distances** |

Answers appear on the participant profile in the manager console and in exports:

|------------|-------------------------|
| **Challenge** | Challenge → **Participants** → **Export XLSX** — one column per custom question ([Exporting challenge data](exporting-challenge-data.md)) |
| **Competition** | Start list → **Full start list** or **Per distances** export — answers included for each racer ([Managing the start list](managing-the-start-list.md)) |
| **Either** | Open the participant row and edit answers directly — [Managing individual racers](managing-individual-racers.md) or [Editing individual challenge participants](editing-individual-challenge-participants.md) |

## Email invitations and join codes

Events with **required** custom questions cannot use one-click [email invitation links](../joining-events/email-invitation-links.md) — participants must complete the full form.

## Marketing vs registration questions

Registration questions are for event-specific data. Club-wide **marketing preferences** (newsletter opt-in) are separate — see [Marketing preferences on registration](marketing-preferences-on-registration.md).
