# Importing the start list from a spreadsheet

Instead of assigning bib numbers one by one, upload an **Excel (.xlsx)** file to update the competition start list in bulk.

**Path:** Competition → **Start list** → import/upload control

## When to use

- Timing company sends a bib assignment spreadsheet
- You exported the start list, edited numbers offline, and need to re-import
- Race-day batch registration produced a list of names and bib numbers

This import updates **bib numbers and participant matching** — it is not the same as [importing timing results](../results/managing-race-results.md) or the [CSV importer](../more-tools/csv-importer.md).

## File requirements

- Format: **`.xlsx`** (Excel Open XML)
- Use the column layout expected by DistantRace (match a recent **export** from the same start list when unsure)

::: warning Processing is asynchronous
After upload, processing runs in the background. Refresh the start list after a minute. You receive a success message when the file is queued.
:::

## After import

1. Spot-check a few entries for correct bib numbers
2. Resolve duplicates via [Merge](../more-tools/merging-duplicate-participants.md) if the file created overlaps
3. Export again for your timing partner if needed — see [Managing the start list](managing-the-start-list.md)
